VERTEX - Virtual Environments: from 3D Representations to Task planning and Execution

VERTEX (Virtual Environments: from 3D Representations to Task planning and Execution) is a project of phase III of the IRIS Network of Centres of Excellence. The objective of the VERTEX project is the development of resources which will allow the interactive use and the efficient integration of tools assisted by virtual and/or augmented environments. VERTEX strives, on one hand, to create a generic method which will use interactive virtual environments and simulations to integrate geometric site models and behavioural models of tools to simulate optimal intervention scenarios. On the other hand, the VERTEX technology will also be used in the execution mode; the scenarios which are planned and optimized in simulation mode will be executed in situ under human supervision, assisted by a panoply of visual sensors and haptic devices which will provide information through a person-machine interface. The targeted applications are, among others, the repairing and updating of large structures and premises where task planning and optimization are essential steps before the final execution.
