Augmented reality concepts for mining vehicle operation

Paul Cohen, Jean-Yves Hervé and Moulay Akhloufi

Abstract - In this paper,we describe a new approach to telerobotics for machinery that intervenes in unstructured and harsh worksites, operates at slow speeds due to its functional structure and size, and whose complex interactions with the environment preclude complete autonomy. At the core of this approach is a mode of transaction, based upon the innovative concept of sensori-motor augmented reality, which enables the dissociation of key aspects of task specifcation and task execution, in a manner that alleviatesthe main diffculties posed by conventional teleoperation.
Overall, this concept aims at producing more effcient, safer, and realistic alternatives to present-day operations.
