On the use of stereovision to develop a novel instrumentation system to extract geometric fire fronts characteristicsAbstract - This paper presents a novel instrumentation system, based on stereovision, for the visualization and quantitative characterization of fire fronts in outdoor conditions. The system consists of a visible pre-calibrated stereo camera, and a computer with dedicated software. Images of the scene are captured simultaneously and processed using specialized algorithms. These algorithms were developed in order to model three-dimensional fire fronts and to extract geometric characteristics like volume, surface area, heading direction and length. Experiments were conducted in outdoor conditions and the results show that the system can successfully measure three-dimensional geometric parameters of fire fronts over a range of combustible and environmental conditions.
