PLASTIQUE: Image retrieval based on cognitive theories

Abstract - This paper presents the image retrieval software PLASTIQUE. It distinguishes itself by the use of a 3D part-based model to represent objects in images. This model is based on results from studies in cognitive psy-chology. This model allows PLASTIQUE to match im-ages of objects that are deformed or seen from different viewpoints. The model also abstracts colours and textures to focus on object structure. Our model and our method to build it can also be used for object recognition applica-tions. The complete system is presented by an overview of all the processing stages. Experiments assess the perform-ance of our model and of the modeling method used in the image retrieval application PLASTIQUE.
